Three young Kommetjie surfers will be competing in the World Surf League’s (WSL) junior world championships in Australia next year.

Jake Elkington, his younger brother Max Elkington and Ford van Jaarsveldt will be representing South Africa and the WSL Africa region at the event in January.

They will be competing in an elite group of the top 32 u.18 boys in the world. They qualified for the junior world championships by competing in the nine Africa WSL pro-junior competitions held at premier surf breaks all around the country, including Kommetjie’s Long Beach.

Jake (18) finished this year’s season as the Africa WSL Junior Champion with three pro junior wins, and two third places as his counting events.

He will be the top seed from the Africa region and has the highest points total of any junior competing in the junior world championships.

Max (16) fought hard against older surfers to gain the fourth qualifying position with two second-place finishes among his counting events.

Ford (18), who currently holds the SA u.18 champion title, finished the year ranked fifth on the Africa junior WSL after a win at the Seal Point Pro Junior.

He has been awarded a WSL wild card.
