Local crimes top national list

The release of the annual national police crime statistics have shown an overall, consistent increase in serious crimes for the past five years.

Of the eight stations in the Mitchell’s Plain policing cluster, Mitchell’s Plain Police Station featured on most of the top 30 national list of stations in the 17 categories. The most significant is the local station’s third spot in the overall category for crime in the country. This was specifically based on the number of crimes reported at the station over the last financial year from April last year to March this year.Phillipi Police Station

Philippi saw increases of between 4% and 80% in common assault, contact sexual offences, carjacking, house robberies (an increase of 80%), burglaries at non-residential premises, commercial crime and shoplifting specifically.

Philippi saw decreases in all overall categories, including arrests for firearms, drugs, drunk driving and sexual offences.

The most cases reported was 704 theft ­cases.

Grassy Park Police Station

Grassy Park saw increases of between 3% and 300% in sexual offences, common robbery, rape, sexual assault, contact sexual offences, robbery at non-residential premises, house robberies and shoplifting.

House robberies increased 300%.

The policing precinct made more arrests for drugs (1763) and driving under the influence (92). The station saw an overall increase in sexual offences, robbery and police action arrests, with decreases in contact crimes, contact-related crimes and other serious crimes. The most cases reported was 1453 theft cases.Strandfontein Police Station

Strandfontein saw increases of between 4% and 600% for assault, truck jacking, carjacking, house robberies (an increase of 600%), burglaries at non-residential properties, house break-ins and, most significantly, more arrests for drugs (548) and driving under the influence (89). There was a decrease in all catagories with the exception of aggravated robbery and police action arrests. The most cases reported was 423 theft cases. Lentegeur Police Station

Lentegeur saw increases of between 17% and 100% for sexual offences, rape, attempted sexual offences (doubled), contact sexual crimes (doubled) and arson and more arrests for drug-related crimes (2444) and driving under the influence (145). They saw an overall decrease in all categories except sexual offences and police action arrests. The most cases reported was 1620 theft ­cases.Mitchell’s Plain Police Station

Mitchell’s Plain saw increases of between 3% and 39% for sexual offences, assault, sexual assault (39%), arson and commercial crime, and more arrests for drug-related crimes (4914) and driving under the influence (183). The station decreased in all overall categories with the exception of sexual offences and police action arrests. The most cases reported was 3322 theft cases.
