Four months ago she could not walk, but with the help of two locals at a fitness club, a Tafelsig woman has a new lease on life.

After suffering a stroke, Janetta Daniels had stiff joints and weak muscles and could do very little for herself. She joined the Wolfgat Social and Fitness Club but found it difficult to do the exercises.

“I couldn’t do anything. I walked a few centimetres, then someone had to take me home,” says Daniels.

She says she is now able to walk, dance and do her own washing.

“The trainers really helped me. They gave me a chair and showed me how to move my muscles. And now my life has changed.”

Patricia Williams and Pamela Arendse do physiotherapy with the women at the club and promote activity four to five days a week. Arendse founded the club in 2014 and it has since grown to 54 members aged 30 and older.

“I saw that not everyone in Tafelsig had the means to join a gym, especially the seniors,” says Arendse.

V The club meets at the Mandela Family and Youth Centre in Tafelsig from 09:00, Monday to Thursday. Anyone is welcome and the fee is R20 per month.
