Ward 72 residents who applied for compost bins had a fair chance to collect them last week.

Residents gathered at the Retreat Civic Centre where the bins were distributed on a “first come first served” basis.

In April 2016, the City of Cape Town embarked on an innovative home composting programme, providing free home composting containers to encourage residents to start composting at home. Instead of throwing away household organic waste, including fruit and vegetable waste, eggshells and teabags, residents are encouraged to use these to generate compost for their gardens.

The aim of this initiative is to help residents deal with their organic household waste and create a good compost system. Good compost feeds nutrients back into the soil, retaining moisture and allowing people to grow their own food or establish a healthy garden.

Ward councillor Kevin Southgate says the City’s recent project to distribute compost bins in the area was a huge success.

“I was very impressed and encouraged by the response from the local community. On both days people had to be turned away as the demand outstripped the supply. An official explained to residents the need to recycle and how to go about making their own garden compost.

“The initiative is part of the City’s ongoing commitment to creating awareness about caring for the environment. More bins will be dropped off at subcouncil 20,” he saysV For more information, contact 0860 103 089 or wastewise@capetown.gov.za.
