More than 12 schools benefited from the Pencil Box Project, a community upliftment initiative hosted by the Lions Club of Kirstenbosch.

Organisers of the event say that more than 1200 learners across the Western Cape received pencil boxes. Local schools that benefited include primary schools in Grassy Park, Hanover Park, Manenberg, Athlone and Retreat.

“The Lions Club of Kirstenbosch is always busy in the local communities, undertaking various projects. In 2015 it was brought to our attention that a lot of learners in disadvantaged areas lack the basic stationery items when they start school. In these areas money is short and the parents do not have the necessary resources to provide such stationery,” says Anne Barr, a representative of the club.

“This is when we started our pencil box project. The pencil boxes contain pencils, a ruler, scissors, eraser, pencil sharpener, coloured pencils, wax crayons and glue stick. We deliver the pencil boxes on the first day of the new term, and if we can raise sufficient funds we will be delivering the pencil boxes again in 2019.”

Some of the lucky schools to benefit include St Mary’s Primary in Nyanga, Manenberg Primary, Bokmakierie Primary in Athlone, Morgenson Primary in Hanover Park and Christian David Moravian in Retreat
