The whereabouts of a 68-year-old man from Hanover Park who went missing more than two weeks ago remain a mystery.

According to reports, Zainodien Moerat was last seen with relatives in Lungango Court on Monday 25 September.

Captain Lance Goliath of Philippi Police Station says the community and police are working closely to ensure the father of four is found.

Moerat made headlines earlier this year after being accused of conning locals while begging for money at street robots.

The elderly man is known to roam the streets of Lansdowne, Grassy Park and surrounding areas, and has become a well-known sight to motorists, who would identify him in his green blazer and white fez.

Moerat, who suffers from Alzheimer’s disease, lost his wife of 38 years 10 years ago.

According to reports, he has never been the same since her death.

He again made headlines in May this year when two young men threatened to harm him for lying about his wife’s death in order to gain their kindness.

Videos of the incident were posted on social media, showing the men blindfolding Moerat and giving him a hard time before forcing him to admit he is a conman.

The videos sparked anger amongst residents of surrounding communities.

Moerat’s 35-year-old son Zainodien Moerat Jr tells People’s Post the family is still trying to find him.

“A lot of people say they saw him here and there, but he is never to be found. The last message I received was to say he was seen in Klip Road, Grassy Park.

“It’s been two weeks now since my dad’s disappearance. If anyone knows his whereabouts please contact the police station and if anyone is keeping him captive please release him and let him come home unharmed. We love our father very much, he’s all we have now in this world,” says Moerat Jr.

Pink Ladies spokesperson Dessi Rechner says: “It seems like he does not want assistance to go back home. People have offered to help but he is used to begging. Please phone Philippi police if seen,” she says.V Anyone with information on Zainodien Moerat’s whereabouts should call Philippi Police Station on 021 690 1500 or Pink Ladies on 072 214 7439. The Moerat family can also be called on 071 060 7227.
