Local parks get a polish

2017-06-27 06:00

More than R1m will be spent on upgrading parks in Mitchell’s Plain over the coming year.

Starting in July, the City of Cape Town will upgrade parks in Tafelsig, Portlands, Rocklands, Philippi, Fairways and Princess Vlei, in addition to the work already started.

The City has a network of 12 district parks, 3526 community parks, 151 sports fields, 197 community and indoor centres, 10 biodiversity areas and 72 beaches.

In Area South, ward allocation funding of more than R7.6m was used in this past financial year, including:

. Upgrades of parks in Morgenster, Merrydale, Gugulethu, Newlands, Muizenberg and Wynberg.

. Minor upgrades at the St Augustine’s and Groenewald sports fields.

. Buying gym equipment for the Seawinds Community Centre.

The budget for the coming year includes:

. R230 000 to upgrade parks in Tafelsig.

. R800 000 for upgrades to public open spaces in ward 81 (Portlands and Rocklands).

. R400 000 to upgrade Luzuko Park in Philippi.

. R400 000 to upgrade fencing at the Panton Road park in Fairways.

. R200 000 to upgrade the Princess Vlei park.

“Quality public open spaces and recreational facilities are crucial for any city and Cape Town is no different.

“Given the sheer number of facilities across the city, we need all the help we can get to maintain them and upgrade and extend them as the needs of communities change. Ward allocation funding is a massive shot in the arm in this quest and for that we are thankful,” says Eddie Andrews, Mayco member (South).

“I also appeal to communities to do their bit to prolong the life-span of their local facilities.

“We spend an inordinate amount of money every year on repairs and replacement of infrastructure as a result of vandalism. This type of destructive behaviour sets communities back unnecessarily.”

He further urges residents to take ownership of their facilities and open spaces.
