Two locals have been recognised for their efforts in their communities. The residents were awarded for their contribution in their communities.

Monica Petersen, chairperson of the Lakeview Neighbourhood Watch, and Gavin Walbrugh, chairperson of the Steenberg Community Policing Forum (CPF), received civic awards at a subcouncil 20 meeting at Alphen Centre recently. They were nominated for the honour by ward councillors, community organisations and the public.

Petersen has been instrumental in a number of initiatives in her community.

“Her commitment to addressing the challenges of a community overcome by crime is highly commendable. She was instrumental in launching the Lakeview Neighbourhood Watch as well as the Lakeview Residents’ Association.

“She has the ability to mobilise people for the greater good, such as walking the streets of Lakeview at night and confronting drug peddlers and users to stop their nonsense,” says ward councillor Kevin Southgate.

“She has a heart of gold and is willing to help those in need through the many initiatives she has spearheaded within her community.

“She and her members have taken a keen interest in protecting the environment through regular cleanups at Langevlei and Manitoba Park, as well as getting the community, especially the youth, to paint over graffiti in an effort to take back ownership of public open spaces.”

Southgate says Walbrugh has been a dedicated servant of the local community for a number of years.

“His passion and commitment to service has been unwavering. When no-one was prepared to take up the position of secretary of the Steenberg CPF because of its demands, Walbrugh made himself available and has since served the organisation with impeccable fortitude. He has also been instrumental in the coordination of neighbourhood watch activities in the area and has never been too busy to participate in nighttime patrols and searches for missing persons. He is an exemplary leader whose dedication to service serves as a beacon of hope in a community overcome by drugs, gangsterism and various social ills,” says Southgate.

“He is also an integral part of the local neighbourhood watch feeding scheme that reaches out to the poorer communities within the Steenberg policing precinct by running a regular soup kitchen and hosting an end-of-year Christmas function for the children.

“His election as chairperson of the Steenberg CPF is a reflection of the confidence the community has in his commitment to serve.”
