Grassy Park golfer Idrees Saban narrowly missed out on winning the Bridge Fund Managers Junior Series event at Royal Cape Golf Club last week.

Despite being able to birdie the final two holes, it was only enough to secure second place in the event for the 18-year-old, who matriculated from South Peninsula High School.

Saban appeared to derail his title challenge after dropping shots on the relatively easy 11th and 12th holes.

“I stayed calm and focused because I know I have been in that position before and bounced back,” he explains.

His birdie-birdie finish, including a sensational approach shot on the final hole, pulled him within two shots of winner Francois Cilliers, the reigning Western Province junior matchplay champion, who shot 69.

Saban, whose best ever round is a 66, has his eyes set on a career as a professional golfer and will be heading to qualifying school.

Managed by the South African Golf Development Board, the #BridgeJuniorSeries of events run countrywide from this month through to March next year for boys and girls in the u.13 and u.19 divisions.

“The first year of the #BridgeJuniorSeries exceeded our expectations, attracting full fields and producing thrilling golf. So we are looking forward to what the country’s exceptional young boy and girl golfers have in store for us in season two,” says Paul Stewart, executive director of Bridge Fund Managers.

The big prize sees the top two u.19 golfers being flown to the USA to compete in the Junior North and South Championships at Pinehurst next year – an event which has featured future Majors winners including Jack Nicklaus.

“Season one was very popular, and we had worthy winners in Nikhil and Deon, who will do us proud at Pinehurst. I encourage young golfers across the country to head for the website to enter season two. These events are an opportunity to make new friends and gain invaluable tournament golf experience,” says Grant Hepburn, CEO of GolfRSA, who was delighted by the tournament’s success.

The next tournament is at Boschenmeer Golf Estate in Paarl on Sunday 19 August.
