Local watcher wins award

Several individuals were awarded for going above and beyond their normal duties at the first Neighbourhood Watch (NHW) Awards ceremony last week.

Tony Schreiber, co-founder of both the Bergvliet, Kirstenhof and Meadowridge Neighbourhood Watch and Constantia Valley Watches Association (CVIC), received the Above and Beyond award.

Mike Voortman, chairperson of the CVIC, says they are proud that one of their own nominees received an award.

“We must commend the City for its ongoing support of the neighbourhood watch initiatives – as they enable communities greatly, thereby allowing even the poorest areas to take back their streets.”

Voortman says the lively attendees and the neighbourly spirit of the awards evening were testament to the fact that the City is bringing communities together with its programmes.

“They have clearly listened to their citizens and have truly embraced the concept. It was fantastic to see the appreciation of the recipients of the awards and all nominees received certificates.”

Hylton Mitchell, chairperson of the NHW Awards committee, says they received 122 entries from NHWs all over Cape Town, but six individuals and the NHW of Year stood out above the rest.

“The inaugural awards event brings to light the incredible volunteer work being done by NHW members who often do this kind of community service work without seeking any favour or reward,” he says.

Mitchell says the winners were recognised for their contribution in going above and beyond the call of regular NHW duties and being instrumental in their communities in the fight against increasing crime.

“Neighbourhood watch formations are one of the most effective ways crime is reduced in communities,” he says.

“The City of Cape Town through the safety and security directorate, led by JP Smith, has committed to provide more training, resources and support to NHWs throughout the Cape metropole,” he adds.
