Locals getting creative at park

2015-11-24 06:00

A community fundraising initiative to upgrade St John’s Road Park will see locals getting creative.

An Art in the Park event aims to bring people of all ages together in a collaborative painting event to raise funds for the upgrade. There will be a full Artjamming studio on site, and music and entertainment throughout the day.

Artjamming owner Leora Hessen says the park has been a very well used facility by families in the area for more than 30 years.

“Unfortunately, due to budget constraints upgrades have not been done and the facilities are in bad condition. The budget that is now available, from the City, is unfortunately still far too little to make all the necessary upgrades. These upgrades will make the park safer and healthier for children and dogs using it on a daily basis,” she says.

A planned R100 000 upgrade will bring a dedicated dog walking area to the St Johns Road Park (St Johns Road Park to get ‘fresh look’, People’s Post, 27 October).

A section of the park is already allocated to off-leash activities, but due to the number of people using this park with dogs, it has been decided to make the area larger, explains ward councillor Jacques Weber.

“Some of the equipment will be moved around to accommodate the extended dog run area and to allow for mothers to keep an eye on their children,” says Weber.

V The event will take place on Sunday 6 December from 10:00 to 16:00. Details: www.artjamming.co.za
