Heideveld will be filled with huge colourful kites on the morning of Wednesday 24 October when international and local kite experts put on a special preview in the run-up to the 24th Cape Town International Kite Festival.

Locals can expect a variety of spectacular displays at the Heideveld Sports Centre in Zuurberg Road from 11:00 to 12:00, explains Cathy Williams, media spokesperson for the Cape Town International Kite Festival.

“The ‘kiters’ will be visiting the area to share a little kite festival magic with the community, and with children who attend the Cape Mental Health’s Heideveld Special Care and Education Centre.

“The annual kite festival is also the grand finale to October’s Mental Health Awareness Month campaign and has been flying in support of Cape Mental Health since 1994,” she says.

Williams says it will not be the first time the kite experts visit Heideveld, and explains that the number of community members who attend varies every year.

“There will be a variety of kites on display on the day, depending on the wind, but viewers can expect a mixture of stunt kites, single-line giant inflatables, a land-based inflatable car and beautiful handcrafted mosaics.

“Everyone is welcome to attend and there is tons of space on the sports field for locals to fly their own kites as well.”

The main Cape Town International Kite Festival will take place in Muizenberg over a period of two days, with over 15 000 people expected to attend.
