After two years of hard work, 30 Tafelsig residents have set off on pilgrimage.

The residents, who all belong to the Masjidul Aashiq Mosque in New Tafelsig, left for their pilgrimage to Palestine, Mecca and Medina on Tuesday.

The trip will take a total of 20 days, with the group stopping off at various sites, including the oldest church in Jordan and all the holy cities and places, including homes of prophets.

“This is an underprivileged area and the women’s council worked hard for two years to get the money for this trip,” says Imam Abdurazak Nordien.

“They had various fundraisers that had to come from their own pockets to be able to raise the funds for everyone to go.”

Nordien says as the start of the trip approached, emotions ran high.

“This is the first time that many of them are going and everyone is excited and nervous. It is very emotional,” says Nordien.

The mosque held a farewell for the group on Tuesday before they headed to the airport. Here family members and friends wished them well on their way.

The tour group is made up of mostly elderly people, who have not had the opportunity to go before.

“There is a lot of violence and negativity in Tafelsig and we want to showcase this as it is something good and positive in our community,” he says.

The trip costs around R21 000 per person, Nordien says.

The group is accompanied by other spiritual leaders.

“It was very tough. For two years they have been putting in hard work,” says Nordien.
