Capetonians embraced a French tradition to show their love this Valentine’s Day – all while giving to a good cause.

Love Lock Lane, which was opened at the V&A Waterfront on Sunday, is based on Paris’s Love Bridge (Pont des Arts) where couples traditionally attach a lock with their names on it to the bridge’s fence.

The launch of Love Lock Lane saw several couples attach locks to the bridge. They the locks for R50 each and got a Relate bracelet to take home with them.

Relate bracelets are handmade, beaded bracelets made to raise funds for more than 80 causes.

Proceeds from the sale of each bracelet support not only the relevant causes, but also the seniors in impoverished communities who supplement their pensions by threading the beads. Many of these senior citizens care for their grandchildren and others orphaned by HIV/Aids.

Relate’s younger staff members, who close and pack the bracelets, also benefit with training in their chosen fields to further their careers.

In keeping with the Relate bracelet mission of social upliftment, proceeds from the sale of locks and bracelets at Love Lock Lane will be donated to the V&A Waterfront’s chosen beneficiaries – Haven Night Shelter, Tears Animal Shelter, Home of Hope, Atlantic Hope and Nazareth House.

By supporting this bracelet-and-lock duo, lovers will also be supporting initiatives that give love and care to vulnerable babies, children, adults and animals in the local community.
