Long, hard look at gender-based violence

2018-11-20 06:00

I’m filled with mixed emotions this past week – bittersweet – at the successful conviction of the perpetrators of the heinous crimes involving the horrific murders of Susan Rohde by her husband, Mortiner Saunders’s killing of toddler Courtney Pietersen, and the brutal rape and killing of Stellenbosch University student Hannah Cornelius at the hands of Vernon Witbooi, Geraldo Parsons and Eben van Niekerk.

While we applaud the judiciary for the successful convictions, we mourn with the grieving families of the deceased.

With the campaign 16 days activism of no violence against women and children commencing on Sunday 25 November until Monday 10 December, society is challenged to ensure that this campaign is perennial.

While the perpetrators of gender-based violence and the aforesaid murderers will receive heavy sentences, will it deter men from their ongoing evil deeds?

Society needs a careful rethink and much introspection of the criminal acts perpetrated against vulnerable women and children.

What other deterrents are there, and our do we transform the mindset?

It starts with me.
