A few former Windermere High School pupils have been friends for over 50 years.

A group of seniors, who met at the school in 1964, says since they met they have not let go.

They have created a WhatsApp group to keep in touch and they meet up for breakfast once a month and talk about their days at school and encourage and strengthen each other. Above all, they don’t forget to be grateful for the journey that they have walked together and that they are still together.

On Saturday they had a thanksgiving breakfast together at one of the friends’ house. They teased each other whilst they had a good time.

Opening their meeting with a note of welcome was Dee Matthews who said they were grateful for their friendship because it was a special thing.

“We have been buddies for long and we really appreciate that we have managed to keep together for so many years. Friendship is a gift from God and I really thank each and one of you for being here and for us sticking together in the good and the bad times.”

When they are together they talk about the good old days – how they used to be at school and their boyfriends and girls and who was the naughty one and how they keep each other laughing.

They sit and reminisce about those days and they say what young people don’t do today is value true friendship.

“When we got to the school we just clicked. Most of us happened to be in the same class and since then we never let go.

“When someone is having a bad time we will all go to comfort him. When a parent died we would make sure that we went and visited them. With that our bond together has grown so much. Now and again we go for outings and talk about the good things. We really enjoy each other’s company,” says Ursula Daniels.

Over the years most of them got married and when they attend their gatherings they bring their partners with to share the joy.

“It’s so amazing to have friends whom you can trust and count on. When you don’t have family around you know you have people who will help you out and hold your hand. Not so many people can keep their friends for so long and for us it just shows God’s grace. It’s very vital to have friends who are always there.

“We believe that what has kept us for this long is being honest and open with each other. We have been there through the joys and the sorrows. Everyone knows if there is something not okay they can pick up a phone and call a friend who will be quick to assist. The love that we have for one another really keeps us going,” adds Matthews.

Margaret Saaiman says when they look back they are amazed by how far they have come and where they are still going together.
