A group of seniors from The Leagues celebrated Valentine’s Day in style at their biweekly meeting on Wednesday last week.

The soon-to-be named seniors’ club was revived in November last year and already has 30 members.

On Wednesday, at a hall in Filbert Street, the seniors enjoyed one another’s company and snacks in the room filled with hearts and red-and-white decor.

The seniors also dressed in red and white.

The event concluded with a best dressed competition.

Siena Isaacs, one of the founding members of the club, said she has been living in The Leagues since 1995.

“We started the seniors’ club before but [interest] died down. Last year we decided that we should start again and we started in November,” she says.

“We have a nice group of people here. We have Xhosa-speaking, English-speaking and Afrikaans-speaking residents all in our club.”

The group has not yet been named as they first want to elect their executive and register as a body. To do so, they need to have a constitution and executive, says Isaacs. As they have not yet had a quorum, they have not been able to hold the election.

“We are hoping that this club grows and goes from strength to strength,” she said.

Antonia Ralo, one of the residents who attends the club, said she is happy to be a part of the club and joked that she could find love and a Valentine there.

Local pastor, Piet Malejoane from the Life Church, also attended the event and opened with a prayer and scripture reading about love.

The club meets every second Wednesday.
