Maitland residents aired their frustration over a planned housing development at Kensington Road on Wednesday 28 August.

They filled the Abdulah Haroon Learning Centre on Coronation Street at a strategic meeting on Wednesday evening.

The following concerns were raised:

• the need for housing for the needy people;

• the impact of low-cost housing on their property value;

• the impact of traffic;

• the possible loss of significant views of the area;

• lack of infrastructure to accommodate the growing population;

• social ills that "usually come" with low-cost housing.

Residents say they were shocked to learn about the plan from People's Post's article around the development as they say they last had engagements with the City of Cape Town about this matter in 2016 where they objected the proposal and claim the City, along with ward 56 councillor Helen Jacobs, decided to turn a blind eye and carry on.

Residents were disappointed that Jacobs was absent from the meeting.

People's Post was also advised by residents that she would be present at the meeting shortly before the meeting started.

Jacobs, via her secretary, had previously confirmed she was aware of the concerns by the Maitland community and promised to have engagements with them.

Residents said they will do everything in their power to make the City hear their plight and consider moving the development elsewhere.

The group are expected to show their commitment to opposing this plan at a public meeting to be held at Maitland Resource Centre on Thursday 5 September at 19:00.
