Lucky escape for learners

2018-05-08 06:00

Westcott Primary School principal John Robertson has thanked parents who promptly came to the aid of the victims of a school bus accident on Monday 30 April.

The accident, which left 12 learners and three teachers injured, occurred in Albertinia at around 11:00.

The incident apparently happened when the bus experienced a burst tyre while travelling from Knysna back to Diep River.

The victims were learners between the ages of 12 and 13 who had gone on a weekend-long netball tour accompanied by teachers, including the driver.

Robertson says: “Luckily there were parents who voluntarily went to facilitate the tour. They were following the bus and they immediately attended to the injured people and called for help. We appreciate them so much for their selfless gesture.”

He says the incident was unfortunate because everything had gone well on the tour and the learners were happy to be going home.

Robertson says the driver was brave enough to avoid causing further damages to other vehicles when the accident happened.

“He did a good job – he swerved out of the road as he realised he was losing control and they overturned. We are glad there were no serious injuries – it could have been worse.”

According to Robertson, all the victims were treated at Riverdale Hospital and were discharged. He says they took a few days to recover at home before returning to classes.

He says this was the first time their bus had been involved in an accident.
