Mitchell’s Plain cluster police have stopped a major drug drop following a tip-off from a resident.

On Monday 11 April at 17:30, police received the tip-off that a narcotics drop would take place in the Westgate Mall parking lot, says police spokesperson Sergeant Cathy Meyer.

“[The tip-off said] a white Honda Ballade with gold rims [would be part of the drop off].Officers reached the car and asked for permission from the driver to search the vehicle. Police found a bag full of tik,” says Meyer.

Community police forum chairperson Mark Brookes says this is testament to the strengthening of trust between the police and the community.

“It would be unfair to only give praise to police for this drug bust when the information came from the ground. We must thank the community for their involvement,” says Brookes.

Brookes says the man is believed to be a runner for a known drug king pin.

“We have been very target oriented and when we took office there was no trust in the police.

“We are the ears and eyes of the police and we will not be able to irradicate this problem outside the legal framework.”

A total of 800 1-gram packets were found and the estimated street value for this is R128 000.

The 21-year-old man was arrested on a charge of possession of narcotics.
