President Cyril Ramaphosa has made the wearing of masks obligatory from Friday 1 May as South Africa moves to level 4 lockdown.

With level 4 lockdown restrictions meaning a bit more freedom and movement for South Africans, many are left wondering how they may acquire these masks.

While some may not have access to buying one, others may not want to venture out of their homes to acquire them.

The Western Cape department of health also advises that masks should be worn while in isolation for those who have tested positive.

“It is recommended to wear a mask in isolation to protect other members of the household. Caregivers of Covid-19 cases are also required to wear a mask when interacting with the ill person,” reads a statement by the department.

With this in mind, People’s Post has ventured out to show you how to make your own effective cloth face masks as well as an emergency mask, should you require one in a pinch.

The masks are easy to make with materials you already have around the house.

These masks can be sewn, glued, stapled or simply folded around your face.

In separate video clips, the masks require little to medium skill levels and can also be a fun project to keep the children active – under adult supervision.

For all three variants of these cloth masks, you will need an old item of clothing – jeans leg, old t-shirt, pants or leggings.

A piece of fabric, old curtains, old bedding, a scarf or bandana can also be used. You will also need two hair ties, rubber bands, shoe laces, string, elastic, extra bits of fabric or ribbon to tie the mask and a stapler, needle and thread, sewing machine, glue gun or other fastening methods.
