Athlone police apprehended a man (34) in possession of an unlicensed firearm on Tuesday 15 October in the Vygieskraal informal settlement in Athlone. Police officers were busy with tracing operations in the area when they identified the suspicious man, who fled the scene on sight. “The officers gave chase and the suspect ran into a shack. He took out a firearm and threw it under the bed,” explained Athlone police spokesperson, Sgt Zita Norman. “Police officers saw what he was doing and arrested the suspect. The black pistol was recovered with black tape around the handle.” According to Norman, the firearm had 12 rounds, and the serial number of the firearm had been filed off.“A case of possession of an illegal firearm was opened at the Athlone police station and the suspect will appear at the Athlone magistrate’s court,” Norman said.
