A 28-year-old man has been arrested on charges of possession of an unlicenced pistol and ammunition.

Mitchell’s Plain police arrested the alleged gang member in First Avenue on Wednesday, says police spokesperson Lieutenant Ian Williams.

“At about 13:00 officers received information that an armed suspect was in the vicinity of the Mitchell’s Plain Magistrates’ Court,” says Williams.

“On their arrival the officers heard several shots being fired and the members noticed the suspect on an open field next the court.”

Williams says the suspect was approached and the officers saw him drop the firearm on the ground.

The suspect was immediately arrested.

The officers confiscated a 9mm pistol with sevens rounds of live ammunition.

No-one was injured in the incident.

The man has since appeared in court on charges of illegal possession of an unlicenced firearm and ammunition.
