A 49-year-old man died after being shot in Galilee Court, Hanover Park on Sunday.

Philippi police spokesperson Lieutenant Lance Goliath says police found the man dead at about 06:00 after they were called to the scene.

“The deceased sustained a single gunshot wound to his head. Seven spent cartridges were found at the crime scene. Paramedics certified the body as dead on the crime scene. The motive for the killing is unknown and it has yet to be determined if the murder was gang-related,” Goliath says.

The suspect fled the scene and is still at large. Police are investigating the murder and urge the public to come forward with information regarding the incident, Goliath adds.

Last week Philippi police made 60 arrests for various crimes. An increase in police visibility through an integrated approach and the deployment of personnel who are working in the support service environment, as well as detectives, turned out to be successful.

“Police were deployed around the business sectors as well as the greater Hanover Park area with the main focus on the area known as the ‘top block’ where most of the crimes occur,” Goliath says.

The tactical response team, Operation Combat, the flying squad, Metro Police and Law Enforcement formed part of the crime prevention strategy. V Anyone with information on crime can call Philippi police on 021 690 1500 or CrimeStop on 08600 10111.
