A Manenberg police officer is in a stable condition after he was shot and wounded during a crime prevention operation.

Manenberg police spokesperson Captain Ian Bennett says the incident occurred at 09:15 this morning (Thursday 24 November).

“We went into the area to conduct crime prevention operations. The community fired shots at police in Renoster Walk and police fired shots back. One of our officers was shot during this incident,” he says.

Bennett says the officer was taken to Gatesville Medi-Clinic for medical attention and is in a stable condition. He declined to comment on the extent of the officer's injuries, however, according to reports on social media the officer was shot in his stomach.

Police were restricting access to the area following the shooting, Bennett confirmed.

“The community is making it really difficult for us to do our job when they report crimes and stone and slash tyres of our vehicles when we attend to their complaints. This is so unnecessary, our vehicle was damaged really badly,” he says.

Bennett confirms arrests were made for public violence.
