The Christel House charity celebrated 20 years of transformation with Trevor Manuel and Founder’s Day on Friday 19 October.

As one of South Africa’s longest serving finance ministers, Manuel provided critical insight into the current sociopolitical landscape of South Africa and praised Christel House for its dynamic work in transforming the lives of impoverished children.

Established in 1998, Christel House is a global charity with a single mission: To break the cycle of poverty.

It operates eight learning centres around the world, of which its school in Ottery (Cape Town) is the only one in Africa.

Manuel emphasised the utmost importance that education plays in the transformation of South Africa. “The preamble of our constitution is that we raise the living standards and free the potential of each person. And that is what brought all of us here this morning – the investment to free the potential of each young person who passes through Christel House. If you haven’t made the investment in education, then you don’t begin to understand what the potential is. And the potential of children who come from poor backgrounds is what the Christel House story is all about,” Manuel said.

Some of the companies in attendance were the Amdec Group, Cape Grace Hotel, Fedics, Scorpion Security, redPanda Software and First National Bank. The programme included various musical items performed by Christel House learners and an in-depth question-and-answer session with Manuel.

After the business breakfast event, Christel House welcomed 120 band members from the New Apostolic Church of West Germany, who gave a musical performance, occasionally collaborating with the school’s orchestra. Concluding the performance, the youth orchestra handed over a cheque for a donation of R80 000 towards Christel House’s continued work with impoverished children. As part of the remaining Founder’s Day celebrations, Christel House unveiled a commemorative plaque in honour of DeHaan.

DeHaan founded Christel House International in 1998. V Individuals and companies wanting to partner and get involved with Christel House can contact Kristen Goezaar on 021 704 9417 or at kgoezaar@sa.christelhouse.org, or visit http://southafrica.christelhouse.org/
