The inaugural Mitchell’s Plain Urban Market at the Westridge Gardens on Saturday saw thousands of feet through the gates to celebrate local artisans.

More than 50 stalls were booked for the first market and this number has already grown for the next event.

The market was established to promote innovation, sustainability and opportunity in the wider community while supporting local traders and entrepreneurs (“Market shows off,” People’s Post, 31 October).

“[This event is aimed at creating] a weekly recreation initiative and opportunity for residents to improve their lifestyles by providing a platform for part-time employment and a display of local entrepreneurship,” says organiser Mario Oorstendurp.

The market will be held at the De Duin and Silversands entrances of the gardens every Saturday from 09:00 to 16:30.

Entry is free.

The market consists of a variety of stalls and Oorstendurp hopes it can grow to an attractive weekend activity for Mitchell’s Plain residents.

More than 90 stalls have already been booked for this weekend’s market.

“We invite NPOs, clubs and groups to apply for space set aside for fundraising, awareness and education,” says Oorstendurp. Mitchell’s Plain and Strandfontein residents are given preference for booking stalls and food vendors must be accredited.

Local buskers, street performers and musicians are also invited to enhance the vibrancy of the market by using the platform to showcase their talents.
