Market shows off

Entrepreneurs from Mitchell’s Plain and Strandfontein now have a platform to show off their wares at a first-of-its-kind market heading to the Westridge Gardens.

The Mitchell’s Plain Urban Market will start this weekend.

It will offer visitors much more than just a chance for a quick deal, as the market was designed to promote local artisans with added entertainment and other attractions that make it an event not to be missed.

“As the market grows, we will be adding more components to the market, such as live entertainment and more activities.

“For now [you can experience] a variety of bargains while enjoying good food and company. The market aims to offer a decent selection of products at reasonable prices which will make it worth the visit,” says Mario Oorstendurp, the event organiser.

“The trend of community markets has become a popular industry that has been growing rapidly over the past few years. Mitchell’s Plain lacks family-orientated facilities, leaving residents with no option but to travel out of the area to partake in such events. The market aims to become a community social hub and a business incubator, encouraging residents, especially our youth, to grow their entrepreneurial passions into a saleable service, skill or product.”

Many other localised products, services and attractions will be added to enhance future growth, including mini-golf, pony rides, skate jams, open mic sessions and live performances.

For the inaugural event this weekend, Melomed24, Scorpion Security Technologies and Peninsula Beverages are on board.

There will be a variety of foods, a specialist coffee barista and other general stalls selling different wares, including jewellery, clothing and mendi tattoos.

A feature is also the arts and crafts stalls under the banner of the Made in Mitchell’s Plain art, craft and design market.

Activities for the first event include mini-carnival games, pony rides and quad train rides.

“It will be the first of its kind hosted in Mitchell’s Plain as a permanent weekly feature. The fact that the Urban Market will be hosted at the Westridge Gardens makes it even more special, as it will attract more visitors to experience the beauty of the facility. I live at markets and have always wanted to establish a quality event we can call our own. A name together with its logo set us free from the stigma of drugs and crime associated with Mitchell’s Plain,” says Oorstendurp.

There are still stalls available for the event.

The following criteria will be implemented:

. Mitchell’s Plain or Strandfontein residents will be given preference to sell at the markets.

. All items must be presented well and be suitable for sale.

. All food vendors will need to be in possession of a valid COA and comply with all its regulations.

. Environmental standards must be upheld, considering the sensitivity of the market location.

. All vendors will have to adopt standards that are environmentally friendly and are acceptable as set out by the City of Cape Town.

The market will run every Saturday from 09:00 to 16:30.
