Associating numbers with having fun is taking a budding mathematician on a journey to Brazil.

“To excel in maths you have to associate it with fun things,” says one of the eight learners in the province who have been selected for the national team that will be participating in the International Mathematics Olympiad and Pan African Mathematics Olympiad overseas.

Rauseenah Upadhey, a Grade 11 learner of Westerford High School in Rondebosch, says working at mathematics all the time is very important. She says you have to enjoy it and practise more often to make it easy to understand and remember its formulas.

The learners were chosen by the South African Mathematics Foundation through a selection programme, including an olympiad camp in December.

Rauseenah says: “I feel fortunate and excited to go and represent South Africa in an international mathematics olympiad. I am looking forward to being part of the team and getting to focus on just maths.

“I always have loved maths. My mom was a humongous influence because she was a maths teacher. When she did maths with me she would have tickle fights that would make me laugh, making the memories good and so I associate maths with being fun and pleasurable.

“It’s intellectually stimulating and pushes me to further my capabilities.”

She says her secret to success is completion and submission of assignments in time, practising and realising that it is fine to get things wrong as it allows you to learn from and understand why you got it wrong.

Rauseenah says this process will enable you to enjoy and have fun doing maths.

She says although she is stil unsure of her career path, she would love to be an entrepreneur and apply mathematical skills on a daily basis.
