Cape Town mayor Dan Plato met with 15-year-old Ayakha Qhomfo on Monday 18 March to applaud her sporting achievements.

The real-life karate kid has already earned 25 medals in nine years – which include 15 gold, three silver and seven bronze medals.

Last year, she bagged three gold and two bronze medals at the ninth JSKA World Karate Championships in Russia.

Plato said that Qhomfo’s achievements were an example to other young people that through hard work and commitment, they too can reach their goals.

“Ayakha’s journey so far is impressive and her future holds much promise,” Plato said. The young karate kid hopes to make Cape Town proud by bringing back medals from the World Championships in Germany next year.

“We are pleased to see that a young person has such drive and is so goal-oriented. I would like to encourage other young people to have the same discipline and enthusiasm,” Plato added.

He noted her efforts to lift the profile of the sport and plans to improve the well-being of others.
