The Athlone branch of the University of the Third Age (U3A) will be having its general meeting and year-end celebration at the Wheatfield Bowling Club in Belthorn on Thursday at 10:45.The guest speaker is mayor Patricia de Lille.Her talk at noon, entitled “The challenges facing our city and the citizen alliances we need to take us into the future”, will be preceded by a guest talk by Suzette Little, former ward councillor in the area and current Mayco member (North). Little’s talk is entitled “The wealth of water and our part in conserving it”.According to U3A chairperson Jacki Lange, Cape Town is widely regarded as the best run metro in South Africa.“Under her direction, the City of Cape Town has pioneered the transit-orientated development strategic framework and the MyCiTi system, delivered basic services to millions of people, amplified its work of mitigating climate change and reducing carbon emissions through the small-scale embedded generation programme and the solar water heater accreditation programme and become the first African city to use electric buses for its public transport system. Cape Town has also acquired a global reputation for its contribution and membership in numerous international initiatives for cities,” says Lange.“De Lille has served in all three spheres of government, including as a member of parliament for 15 years.
