A new fence has been installed at the Kalk Bay tidal pools.

Apart from demarcating the tidal pools from surrounding restaurants, the new fence also ensures that the public has unrestricted access to this popular spot.

Officials from the City of Cape Town’s Environmental Management Department began the installation of a fence at the Kalk Bay tidal pools on in November, soon after a meeting with a local restaurant owner whose establishment borders the area where the tidal pools are situated, says Mayco member (South) Eddie Andrews.

“We came to an agreement with the restaurant owner and went ahead with the installation which was completed on Thursday 14 December, in time for the annual builders’ holiday. The fence forms a clear boundary with the adjacent restaurant and will ensure that the public has unlimited access to the tidal pools. Kalk Bay is a very popular destination for visitors, tourists, and residents alike and we want everybody to enjoy this space.”

The fence covers an area of around 50m, enclosing the entire tidal pool area. Access is via a self-closing gate that will remain unlocked.

“I also want to remind people that no alcohol is permitted on the beaches or at the City’s tidal pools. We will keep a close eye on the tidal pools during the holidays to ensure that all abide by this bylaw,” says Andrews.
