Mining application retracted

The public participation process for a recent sand mining application has been halted, after the application was withdrawn.

The application by Fazu Sand was to mine five hectares of land for a period of two years.

The plot, named erf 21168, is situated along Camp Road, Baden Powell Drive, Spine Road and Strandfontein Road and borders along 7de Laan Informal Settlement.

A letter dated Wednesday 18 July was sent to all interested parties on Friday 20 July stating the following: “Kindly accept this letter as a notice of withdrawal of the application for a mining permit and environmental authorisation, for sand mining on erf 21168, Mitchell’s Plain.

“The public participation process has hereby ceased. Thank you for your contribution towards the public participation process and the overall basic assessment process for this proposed mining activity on erf 21168, Mitchell’s Plain.”

People’s Post requested information on the reasons for cancellation and if another application would be made for another plot in Strandfontein, but had not received a response by the time of print.

The letter follows a heated public participation meeting at the Strandfontein Community Hall two weeks ago (“‘Leave our dunes alone’”, People’s Post, 17 July).

The meeting was the first of the public participation process for the application and residents strongly opposed the mining.

Health and safety, road infrastructure, noise, dust and the movement of large trucks were all listed as concerns; however Ghaironeesa Diedericks seemed to highlight the sentiment of the community when she declined any form of sand mining.

“No, no, no. We don’t want any sand mining. Before I could look out of my house and see the beach but now I can’t because of the dunes.

“Leave our sand. Leave our dunes, they are beautiful,” she said.

“We all feel that way,” one resident shouted from the back, followed by applause.

The meeting was called and facilitated by ward 43 councillor Elton Jansen, who said that he would support the decision of the community.
