Albert Fritz, the provincial MEC for social development, paid a special visit on Tuesday to the newly renamed Amy Foundation, formerly known as the Amy Biehl Foundation, in Athlone.

The visit formed part of the minister’s ongoing campaign to engage community-based groupings and non-profit organisations in the youth development sector, to share ideas and develop partnerships.

The department has allocated R17.7m to youth development initiatives, and works with 27 youth organisations across the city.

The Amy Foundation has been in operation since 1993 and runs programmes aimed at the development of children and youth between the ages of five and 35 years.

Fritz toured three projects under the foundation’s youth skills development programme.

This included their hospitality project.

The hospitality project trains young cooks and baristas up to entry-level skill sets and puts them into employment with hotels, restaurants and other commercial kitchen spaces.

The foundation’s beauty and wellness programme, led by experienced beauticians, was also toured.

Here learners are trained in wellness techniques, manicure and pedicure treatments, as well as massage therapy.

The sewing, craft and design project also sees learners acquire hard skills in the clothing, textile and other creative skills areas. Learners create crafts which are then sold by the foundation to the public.

The department, through the youth directorate, will explore ways to partner with the Amy Foundation, possibly collaborating in their exciting Youth Café programme.

The minister will continue to engage with other youth organisations, and grow the network of those working together and pooling resources and ideas.
