The inaugural Mitchell’s Plain parkrun took place in and around Westridge Gardens on Saturday.

More than 330 runners from all over Cape Town took part in the event, which is now part of 90 other 5km parkruns held around the country every week of the year.

Race director Wisaal Osman says that the event was a success and that “The councillor Eddie Andrews was there as well and he was excited that the event was taking place in Mitchell’s Plain for the upliftment of the community. Two people joined the 50 milestone club and they especially came to do their 50th at the Mitchell’s Plain launch,” she said.

The all-inclusive race took place entirely inside the Westridge Gardens and Osman hopes to include the surrounding sports complexes to spread out the course a little bit more while also having the sports clubs become involved.

“Our first priority was getting parkrun up and going. Once it becomes an event which attracts more people, we will incorporate more stakeholders,” adds Osman.

She was chuffed that the launch of Mitchell’s Plain’s parkrun has already made waves.

“We (Mitchell’s Plain parkrun) had the highest new registrations in the world for last week. I checked on Sunday and we were sitting on more than 300 registrations for the week. On 7 January, Bruce Fordyce is also going to come down and do the parkrun in Mitchell’s Plain. He couldn’t make it for our launch on Saturday, but he will be here on 7 January,” says Osman.

She adds that they are always looking for volunteers who are keen to help out with various aspects of the race, but that in the mean time, she will be sacrificing her Saturdays in order to keep up the momentum of the launch. She encouraged everyone in the community to join in on the fun which will be taking place every Saturday.

“Parkrun is for everyone, not just for fit runners. It is for walkers, joggers and crawlers as well, but you can also volunteer. We are a safe space and we are there to support people. So if you feel that you are not that active or that people are going to judge you – it is not the case at all. We actually want you to come to parkrun. That is where you are going to be more active and enjoy your life,” Osman says.
