The City’s Mayco member for economic opportunities and asset management James Vos and Enver Duminy, CEO: Cape Town Tourism, earlier this month unveiled Thando 3, the third mobile visitor information centre (VIC) as part of the build-up to the Cape Town Cycle Tour, held last weekend.

The mobile VIC is the first of its kind in Africa. Cape Town Tourism, the City of Cape Town’s tourism partner is responsible for providing visitor information services and through their vast experience have been able to merge technology with tourism knowledge to provide real-time access to information.

This led to the birth of Thando, a mobile visitor centre.

The purpose of Thando, which aptly means ‘love’ in IsiXhosa, is to meet travellers and locals wherever they are, out on the beat enjoying what Cape Town has to offer.

Thando 3, with its mobile facilities, has the flexibility to support any event whether outdoors or indoors.

“Tourism is a part of my portfolio and I was literally blown away by Thando 3. She boasts a unique feature in that she is powered by a renewable energy source in the form of solar panels.

“This enables the service team to be self-reliant and fully functional where ever they are deployed.

“The mobile facility is able to serve tourists and locals on any tourism enquiries and is manned by a determined, passionate and capable team,” says Vos.

Thando 3 offers the following exciting services:

. Free information brochures regarding tourism in Cape Town and the surrounding areas

. Free distribution of the Cape Town Visitor’s Guide that contains a wealth of information on Cape Town’s new activities, hot spots, and a variety of free vouchers to use at various places in the city which are valid for the year

. Booking services for accommodation, car hire, tours, activities and transfers

. SANParks reservations as well as My Green Cards and My Activity Cards

. Ticketing services such as Webtickets and Computicket

. Free Wi-Fi in the proximity of the vehicle

. Sale of specialised maps and Cape Town Tourism products

“The economic impact and contribution of the tourism industry is of vital importance for the continued growth and development of our city.

“It is even more important that we continue to provide services and facilities that will continue to attract tourists to our beautiful city. Our commitment is to take services to residents and visitors. The deployment of Thando mobile VICs will help us to achieve this,” says Vos.
