Mothers of learners of Voorspoed Primary School in Hanover Park shone at a beauty pageant last Friday.

Moms’ pageant – with a difference took place at a hall in Athlone and was attended by more than 100 mothers.

School principal Reginald John Esau says the event celebrates women who, despite the challenges of Hanover Park, find a purpose to rise above their circumstances. “The mothers in our community have embarked on raising much-needed funds for our school. For the second year in a row, they hosted a moms’ pageant, a pageant with a purpose, for which they did all the planning and choreography,” he says. “They have been practising since April.”

Simone Heradien, a judge of the talent show, says the mothers clearly took pride in the event on the night.

“They took ownership and the entire production showed that they continuously strove to put their best foot forward – literally and figuratively. It exuded professionalism and offered an inspiration to other mothers and the people of Hanover Park in general that life can be positively meaningful,” she says.

“The judging process was flawless and professionally handled by the organisers, on par with any national or worldwide pageant. The process was fair, including scoring, while several moms were rewarded with titles such as Personality, Best Hair and Best Costume besides the two runners-up and winner.”

Heradien says she supported the event for various reasons.

“As a human rights activist and social changer, I firmly believe that as South Africans we need to plough back into our communities towards socio-economic upliftment. Support is needed in communities that remain historically and economically disadvantaged to counteract the constant negative influences and lifestyles generally associated with the people of areas such as Hanover Park, such as drugs, gangsterism, violence and crime.”
