The park in Cockscomb Road in Heideveld has been earmarked for its next phase of upgrades.

The most recent upgrades took place last year and included improving the fencing, replacing the rubber matting underneath the play equipment, resurfacing the netball court, installing new gym equipment, upgrading the irrigation system, planting trees and cleaning up the park (“R1m more for Cockscomb Park”, People’s Post, 11 April 2017).

“In the previous financial year we spent R1m on fencing at Cockscomb Park. Currently the contractor is on site where the two multipurpose courts are being built. Within the next couple of weeks we will do extra gates within the facility,” says ward councillor Anthony Moses.

He adds that the multipurpose courts will be based on the dimensions of netball and basketball courts with an informal park area. There will also be upgrades to the gym area.

The open space, which has historically been used as an informal soccer pitch, will also be repositioned in a different way so that informal soccer can still take place without disturbing activities taking place within the rest of the park.

“The third thing that we will also construct will be the softball diamond and everything that comes with it. Hopefully by the end of June the project will be finished. That is another R1m that will be spent on the facility. The one section of the park is still open for use, because the park is quite big, so it does not affect the side where the children are playing. Sixteen residents (registered on the database) will get work from the project itself,” concludes Moses.
