More jobs awaiting area residents

More work opportunities through the municipality could be on the cards for residents of ward 44 (Heideveld, Manenberg and parts of Athlone) in the upcoming months.

The City of Cape Town aims to create more than 42 000 work opportunities through its extended public works programme (EPWP) in the current financial year.

City records show the council created 20 392 jobs in the last quarter of last year, exceeding its 20 000 target for the quarter by almost 400 jobs.

Anthony Moses, councillor for ward 44, says his targets were also exceeded in the last quarter of last year.

“The reasoning for that is the number of projects within ward 44 over the past year. The four years had about 95 projects, but for the current year there were more than seven projects within the ward and obviously it will escalate because there are more projects which will come to the ward,” he says.

He says projects such as the ongoing road upgrades in Heideveld, the Heideveld housing project, the enumeration project in the informal settlements and the hostel development in the ward has contributed to the upturn and subsequent development of the area.

He adds that the mayor’s cleaning-up campaign will also benefit the area as a result.

“I have previously applied for EPWP projects for the ward which will be based on home-based care, early childhood development, organisational development as well as other poverty alleviating projects.”
