The breakfast team of Bobby Brown and Lindy Hibbard on Smile 90.4FM provided more than smiles for The Haven night shelters during May.

From Monday 23 May the presenters took on the challenge to raise 9040 beds for The Haven night shelter by Friday 27 May.
To do this, they needed each listener to participate in the challenge to donate R12 to help a less fortunate person to participate in The Haven’s rehabilitation program.

The organisation which has 15 shelters throughout the Western Cape provides their residents with a rehabilitation program to integrate them back into their communities, providing each with food, shelter and the necessary social services required.

Listeners leaped in and the breakfast team was overwhelmed by the support shown towards this charity drive.

Lois O’Brien, managing director of Smile 90.4FM, explains that listener contributions quickly reached the set targets.
“In two days they broke two targets set by the team,” she says.
“The initial target of 9040 and a second target of 20 000 was reached by Tuesday, but more was in store when listeners decided that the campaign should continue until Friday with a target of 50 000 beds.”

Excitement was high on Friday morning when the presenters went out to the night shelter in District Six to broadcast from the facility.
They were invited there by Hassan Khan, director from The Haven night shelter, who wanted them to experience the activities of the facility in the final hours leading up to the announcement of the final donation.

Cheers erupted just before 09:00 when the team announced that the campaign had raised funds for 59 040 beds.
But, as they say in the classics, that’s not all, folks.

O’Brien announced that the figure is set to rise because they will be continuing their campaign until Friday 3 June.
“Due to the donations which keep coming in, we have decided to keep the donation line open and a final audited donation will then be handed over to The Haven night shelter to wrap up the Breakfast for Beds campaign.”
