Most violent crimes decrease

The national crime statistics for the year from April last year to March this were released last week.

Grassy ParkContact crimes decreased between 13% and 33% in Grassy Park over the period. This category includes murder, attempted murder, common assault, robbery with aggravating circumstances and assault with the intention to do grievance bodily harm.

Sexual offences and common robbery increased 22% and 3% respectively.

Contact crimes in total decreased 9% to 1341 cases for the year.

Sexual offences, which includes rape, sexual assault, attempted sexual assault and contact sexual offences, increased 22% in the area. Attempted sexual offences decreased from 3 cases in the previous year to 2. A total of 93 sexual offences were dealt with during the year.

Subcategories of aggravated robbery increased 35%. This includes house robberies (24 cases) and business robberies (23 cases), with a decrease of 15% in carjackings.

There was a total of 506 cases of arson and malicious damage to property.

Property-related crimes decreased 15% to 1380 cases. This category includes house break-ins and non-residential premises, car theft and theft out of cars.

Other serious crimes, which include shop lifting, decreased 17% to 1788 cases. There was an increase of 11% in business crime.

Crimes detected as a result of police action increased 28% to 1952 cases. This increase includes drug-related crimes, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs and sexual offences detected as a result of police action. There was a 1% decrease in cases of illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.

PhilippiContact crime in Philippi decreased 5%.

Common robbery increased 5% to 996 cases reported during the year up to March.

Sexual offences, which include rape, sexual assault and attempted sexual assault, decreased 27%. There was an increase of 50% in contact sexual offence cases.

Subcategories of aggravated robbery decreased 8% to 45 cases. This includes a 57% decrease in business robberies and a 80% increase in house robberies.

Contact-related crimes decreased 13% to 326 cases of arson and malicious damage to property.

Property-related crimes decreased 12% to 776 cases. This includes house break-ins and business burglaries, car theft and theft out of cars.

Business crime increased 8% compared to the previous year and cases of shoplifting increased 11%.
