A group of 80 residents from Manenberg gathered on the afternoon of Wednesday 17 October to show their frustration with crime in the area.

The gathering took place on the corner of Venster and Duinefontein streets.

Attended by the area’s ward councillor, Aslam Cassiem, the gathering came after the death of a 34-year-old mother who had been caught up in a shooting earlier that day.

This makes her the latest victim of ongoing gang violence in the area.

Captain Ian Bennett, spokesperson for Manenberg Police Station, confirms that the woman, along with two men (aged 31 and 20), were seriously injured during a drive-by shooting, shortly after 17:50.

“It is alleged that a white Toyota Quantum with tinted windows drove down Venster Road in Manenberg.

“Gunmen within the vehicle randomly opened fire on residents in the street, hitting the victims as they stood on the pavement,” he explains.

“The victims were transported to Heideveld Emergency Centre with private transport. The woman was left with a serious gunshot wound to her head and succumbed to her injuries while being treated.

“The men, who sustained injuries to their buttocks and back, were also treated at the hospital.

“The suspects fled the scene towards Klipfontein Road. It is believed that the driver was a woman and she was wearing a scarf.”

Later that day, the police arrested two suspects allegedly involved in the drive-by shooting, after following up on information matching the description and registration of the car in question.

As the investigation continues, Bennett indicates that it is expected that more suspects will be arrested.

Meanwhile police are still on the search for four suspects, involved in a shooting that occurred in the area last Monday.

The incident took place in broad daylight, claiming the life of a 30-year-old man.

A 36-year-old man who was walking with his partner was also injured at the time of the shooting, explains Bennett.

One of the men in question was targeted on the corner of Venster Street and Blauberg Road and is believed to have been a member of a rival gang in the area.

Bennett says the incident occurred at 07:30 when the members of an opposing gang approached the deceased before opening fire on him.

“Several gunshots were heard. It is alleged that the 30-year-old man was approached by four men.

“One of the men pulled out a firearm and fired several shots at point-blank range, while hitting the victim in the head and neck.

“The man succumbed to his injuries on the scene,” Bennett says.

“According to the 36-year-old man, he was walking with his 24-year-old girlfriend when they were caught in the crossfire. The man was shot in his lower abdomen as he tried running for cover, and he was taken to Heideveld Emergency Centre for emergency medical treatment.”

Bennett adds that the suspects fled the scene on foot and no arrests have been made as yet.

Cases of murder and attempted murder have been opened for investigation.

V Anyone with information regarding the two shooting incidents is urged to call Manenberg police on 021 699 9400 or Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
