With a new director in place, the second opera alla breve, Mozart’s sparkling comedy Der Entfuehrung aus den Serail or The Abduction from the Seraglio, is taking shape as the focal point of the 11th annual Darling Music Experience.

The cast, handpicked by music director Lisa Engelbrecht for the six roles in the abridged production, are mainly acclaimed young opera students who will star in two performances on Saturday 6 (17:00) and Sunday 7 (14:00) February at Evita se Perron Theatre in Darling.

Young music theatre performer and director Raimondo van Staden, director of the much acclaimed alla breve opera Don Giovanni, took over due to the indisposition of Francesco Nassimbeni. The 90-minute production features witty and street-smart dialogue interspersed with some of the most famous opera arias, sung by UCT students, Leah Gunther, Maudee Montierre, Phelo Nodlayiya, Bongani Makhanya and Zwakele Tshabalala. The role of Pasha will be taken by Johannes Slabbert, who was, with Van Staden, the star of Don Giovanni. Music direction is again by Lisa Engelbrecht, who successfully steered Don Giovanni through Darling, at the Klein Karoo Klassique Festival and London, where it was much acclaimed. V Tickets cost R150 or R110 for pensioners and students from Quicket or call Peter on 022 492 2009. Email or visit for more.
