Muggers target walkers in dark

2017-07-18 06:01

Rondebosch police are looking for three muggers who were involved in three different armed robberies last week.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Lyndon Sisam says they were armed with knives and fled with valuables such as money, cellphones and a laptop.

He says police are appealing to anyone who could help them find and arrest the robbers to inform the police.

Sisam says a man was walking to his car in St Andrews Road on Monday last week at noon when he was suddenly accosted by a robber who attacked him and demanded a cellphone and then ran away.

On the same day a 21-year-old woman was walking down Lovers’ Walk at about 20:00 when she was robbed by an unknown man.

“The robber came up behind her and threatened her with a knife, demanding she hand over her belongings. The mugger robbed her of her MacBook and iPhone and ran way. She was not harmed,” explains Sisam.

On the following day at about 18:45, Sisam says, a 24-year-old woman was walking with her friend in a subway in Burg Road when an unknown robber approached them with a knife in his hand.

The two women reportedly tried to run but one of them fell and the robber threatened her with his knife and took her cellphone and personal items valued at R5700.

“The robber is described as a man between the ages of 20 and 30 years.

“The community is cautioned to be vigilant when taking to the street after dark. When approached by a suspicious person from the front, rather cross the street. They will walk past you, then turn around and surprise you from behind.

“Do not use pedestrian bridges or subways when you are walking alone after dark,” says Sisam.

All these muggers are still at large and police are investigating cases of armed robbery.

He adds that flat owners should constantly remind their tenants of security measures. He says the past two weeks has seen an increase in break-ins in flats in Rondebosch.

“Entry is gained via the electronic gate or the electronic driveway gate. The burglars are let in or are slipping in after a tenant has left or arrived at the apartment.”
