Music concert shows local talent

2016-03-29 06:00

Giving local musicians support, respect and a place to grow creatively is the principle on which non-profit organisation Rootspring is founded.

Rootspring is dedicated to serving musical talent, often in need of a platform and funding.

Rootspring started in November 2014 and released its first album, Now is the time by Roger Lucey, in May last year.

The organisation is about to launch three new albums: Kings by Native Young, Esho Funi by Vuyo Katsha and Modokali by Amathongo.

Rootspring will be holding a world music concert at Bluebird garage in Muizenberg to showcase these and some of its newer artists.

The love of good music is the driving force for everyone working at Rootspring, including founder Antonio Rivera.

“Our hope is that we are making a difference in the lives of some musicians in South Africa,” says spokesperson Ebony Blundell.

“Our feeling is that unfortunately much of the music business, globally speaking, tends to simply see artists as cash cows. The relationship between many of these labels and musicians seems to be one-sided, where the label tries to ‘own’ its artists.

“The Rootspring business model is based much more on a relationship of mutual benefit,” explains Blundell.

“We see the value in their work, and give them as artists the respect they are due and vice versa. Although it is important that we can sustain ourselves long term, we still see the benefit and value of creating music simply for its beauty. Value does not always have to been seen in monetary terms,” she says.

V The concert will take place on Saturday 9 April . Doors open at 18:30 and the music starts at 19:30. Entry is R200.
