‘Neighbourhood watch patrollers do not make arrests’

2019-02-12 06:01

Re. the article “Patrollers needed for BKM Watch,” 5 February.

I refer to the above, and while we appreciate your interest in publishing articles relating to the organisation, we request that the articles are published correctly.

In this instance the article is not a reflection of what was sent to you and now places the organisation in a very difficult and compromised position as your publication has led not only the CPF (Community Policing Forum), but also SAPS and DOCS (Department of Community Safety) to believe we as NHW patrollers have the power to arrest people. This statement is in direct contravention of the Neighbourhood Watches Code of Conduct and our constitution.

In addition, the knock-on effect of BKM to recruit new patrollers has been compromised as neighbourhood patrolling is an eyes-and-ears activity and not one of arresting people.

This will potentially limit our drive for new patrollers.
