New association for residents

2017-02-07 06:02

A new civic association was launched in Kewtown recently.

The Kewtown civic association was launched at a meeting on Wednesday 25 January. Lorenzo Louw was elected as the association’s chairperson.

Ward councillor Rashid Adams says Louw is a suitable candidate to fill the role of chairperson. “We elected a body consisting of eight members, including the chairperson, who is a resident in the area. They are fully aware of the requirements and the needs of the community,” says Adams.

Adams says the launch of the Silverlea Civic Association will take place tomorrow.

Anyone living within the boundaries of Appledene Road in the north, lower Klipfontein Road in the south, Calendula Road in the east and Blossom Street in the west is eligible to attend and serve on the association’s executive or working committee.

“The reason for establishing a civic association is to assist me and the City of Cape Town in streamlining service delivery to the people. They will then be chiefly responsible for ensuring that issues of concern are brought to my attention,” says Adams.

The associations are also tasked with informing their immediate community of the progress of their requests and forwarding new requests to Adams’s office.

“Civic bodies are also going to be responsible for assisting me in developing other forums like our sports forums and education forums and that is going to be working for the development of our communities. Our civics will also be responsible in development programmes.”

Adams adds that the Silverlea Civic Association was very active in its previous term. One of its outcomes was the speed hump in Durant Road. “Durant Road was a rat run for bad drivers, who would use it as a race track, but that has actually been attended to by the fact that we now have speed humps in that road. That was because the civic asked for it,” says Adams.

He adds that one of the organisations hosted a party in one of the roads recently, which, he says, brought the community together. “This is what we want to do – develop a community spirit. We need to do things which are going to bring our communities back to each other, so that we can know who we are, who is living next door to us, whose child is whose so that we can live as a happy community.”
