After the severe fires in March last year the Tokai baboon troop made their way to the Silvermine section of Table Mountain National Park (TMNP) in search of food.

They have been seen on several occasions around the Silvermine dam area where visitors often come for picnics and other activities such as dog walking, mountain biking and hiking.

Before the baboons came over to Silvermine, TMNP have generally always issued dog walkers with dog poo bags to clean up after their dogs, as to accommodate the dog owners with an emphasis on responsible dog walking in a national park.

A new initiative has now been implemented with the SANParks Honorary Rangers installing new baboon-proof bins which will prevent baboons from raiding them. Visitors are advised to please use these bins for dog poo only and to take their litter with them.
