Following the local government elections in August, the new subcouncils have been inaugurated.

The two subcouncils operating in Mitchell’s Plain will both be stationed at the Lentegeur Subcouncil chambers in Merrydale Avenue. Each of the subcouncils has eight members consisting of four councillors and four proportional representative (PR) councillors.

Subcouncil 12 and subcouncil 23 held their inauguration last Tuesday. The new chairpersons for the next five years were elected.

Subcouncil 12 consists of ward 78 councillor Eddie Andrews, ward 79 councillor Solomon Philander, ward 81 councillor Danny Christians and ward 82 councillor Sheval Arendse. The PR councillors are Tulani Dasa, Charl Marais, Willem Doman and Annalize van Zyl.

Subcouncil 23 consists of ward 33 councillor Sithembiso Mzobe, ward 43 councillor Elton Jansen, ward 75 councillor Joan Woodman and ward 76 councillor Gouwa Timm. The PR councillors are Suzette Little, Ernest Theron, Vuyokazi Mathanzima and Zukile Adonis.

Arendse was elected (uncontested) as chairperson of subcouncil 12 and Jansen (uncontested) of subcouncil 23.

“It is indeed an honour and privilege for me to welcome you here today to the inaugural meeting of Subcouncil 12. Thank you esteemed colleagues for having had the confidence in me to elect me as your chairperson, the political leader, for the next five years of subcouncil 12,” Arendse said.

He thanked Andrews, who was the previous chairperson: “Thank you for your competent and determined leadership as chairperson of subcouncil 12 in the previous dispensation. I take over the baton from you and hope to continue to work on the issues of this subcouncil and more so, improve on service delivery for the people of Mitchell’s Plain. As a team of dedicated councillors of subcouncil 12, I am more than confident that we will strive for the goals which we set out to achieve together.”

Jansen thanked his wife, mother, the community and the political leadership of the city in his acceptance speech.

He concurred that it was a privilege and honour for him to take up the position of subcouncil chairperson. He further thanked his wife and mother for their support during his election campaign.

“Politics is all about people and someone once said: ‘If you don’t have people’s interest at heart, then politics is not for you.’ I chose politics because I want to make a difference in people’s lives. I want to make a positive contribution to society.

“Our people have suffered for many years and today – 22 years since the dawn of democracy – we still have a lot to do to narrow the gap that was caused by the apartheid regime. I pledge to contribute to the eradication of poverty and work towards creating opportunities for our youth. Furthermore, I will make sure that equal and adequate services be delivered to all in our community and make sure that our people are treated with dignity and respect.”
