Local government has put a spotlight on substance abuse with an awareness campaign.

Albert Fritz, provincial Minister of Social Development, launched the active phase of the department’s substance abuse awareness campaign with a door-to-door visit in Beacon Valley last Monday.

The campaign was conducted with the theme “substance abuse is everyone’s concern”.

Fritz was joined by social workers of the department’s metro south regional and Mitchell’s Plain local offices and drug and alcohol addiction treatment specialists of the Cape Town Drug Counselling Centre and the Sultan Bahu Centre.

The provincial Department of Social Development launched the campaign online with a substance abuse mobisite and Facebook page.

Since the launch, the Facebook page, which also links to a mobile website, received 66 291 engagements.

The department used the campaign to promote its expanding services for treatment and provide information on how to access them. The mobisite gives information on how to identify substance abuse and where to find help.

The department has allocated R58m in this financial year to more than 36 NGOs working with substance abuse treatment at 51 sites across the province.

V For more information visit or call the department’s hotline on 0800 220 250.
